Slowly rising, the Jeddah Tower under construction is laying the groundwork for a new district in the Saudi Arabian coastal city of the same name, which serves as a gateway to the country's holy sites. Due to be completed by 2020 (but the project was halted first in 2018 and then due to a pandemic Corona, and work is still on hold), the Jeddah Tower will be the world's tallest, reassuring visitors that they are in the right.
And the Jeddah Tower is a manifestation of the ambition behind the Vision 2030 initiative to reduce the kingdom’s dependence on oil by diversifying its economy. Along the northwest coast near Jordan and Egypt, the $1.2 billion Jeddah Tower will be the centerpiece of a $20 billion multi-service district called Jeddah Economic City located on the Red Sea coast.
