The Great Man-Made River Project
The Libya Great Man-Made River Project (GMRP) is a $20 billion, a 4,000 - kilometer concrete pipeline project that includes well fields, pumping stations, water treatment facilities, and storage tanks, with the goal of delivering more than 6.5 million tonnes (1.7 billion US gallons) of water per day to Libya's agricultural, industrial, and municipal areas.
The Great Man-Made River Project is the world's largest underground network of pipes (3000 km) and largest water channels, with more than 1,300 wells, the majority of which are more than 500 meters deep, and provides 6,500,000 cubic meters of fresh water per day to the cities of Tripoli, Benghazi, Sirte, and other places, and its description by the late Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi was " the great man-made river has ever been made ."
The Great Man-Made River Project cost more than 25 billion dollars, and Libya completed it without the help of major countries or loans from international banks. Since 1990, UNESCO has solely given training for engineers and technicians working on the project.
