Grand Inga Dam

The Grand Inga Dam

a hydroelectric dam on the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is at the top of the list of Africa's ten largest construction projects.

The dam is expected to produce 39,000 megawatts per year on average, roughly double that of China's Three Gorges Dam, making it the world's largest hydroelectric project.

The cost of the Grand Inga Dam is predicted to be around $100 billion, not considering the cost of transmission lines to transport electricity across the continent.

The project was supposed to commence in December 2016, however the World Bank withdrew its funding in July of that year due to issues over the project.

The Grand Inga Dam will be built in seven stages, the first of which is the Inga 3 project. The Inga 3 project will be built in two stages, first a low head and then a high head, which will expand and raise the dam wall.

There will be no Congo River dams, no tunnels, and only an open channel. The Inga 3 project will convert about 6000 m3/s of water into a valley that will run parallel to the Congo River's path. The Inga 3 project, when finished, will generate 4,800 megawatts of power.
