Noor solar system project
Noor solar system project
When the first phase of this facility was completed in 2016, it covered an area of around 1.4 million square metres and provided enough electricity to power 650,000 people. The $9 billion solar power facility will generate 580 megawatts of electricity in 2020, enough to power more than a million homes.
Perhaps most importantly, the solar farm near Ouarzazate - dubbed the "Gateway to the Sahara" - might usher in a new time of cleaner energy production in Africa. The solar farm's name, Nour, is a word that means "light," implying that the farm is the start of a new industry for a country that previously imported 97 percent of its energy. In the not-too-distant future, Morocco hopes to become an energy exporter to Europe and other parts of the African continent and the Arab world.
Noor's solar panels produce noise as they move to track the sun, which illuminates the desert for up to 3,600 hours a year, providing Morocco one of the world's highest solar levels.
