Who We Are

About Caravanserai

Established in 1996 by artist Amina Sabry, CARAVANSERAI evolved from the love of art, furnishings and decoration. In the early 90's, while living in India, Amina’s passion for old pieces took her to the 'go downs' of Old Delhi and the old textile markets which were then the fashion the world over. From there, she handpicked unique items such as Indian chests, pitaras, old doors, block prints, patchworks, etc. and sent them back to Egypt where eventually they made up the contents of her very first accessory shop, a quaint 50 sqm space (photo above and currently our gift shop) discreetly nestled in the back of a building (circa 1940's) in Zamalek, chosen for its elite neighborhood once referred to as the Garden Island.

Fueling the desire for design diversity, Amina's subsequent travels extended further into the Orient. At home, she experimented with local manufacturing, collaborating with her brother and partner, Abdel Hamid's ALAMEIN furniture workshops, creating a unique CARAVANSERAI line fusing Egyptian oriental design elements with modern minimalism.

In 2000, Hoda Elattar came on board with her management expertise, and shortly after we opened a new showroom (15 Ahmed Hishmat St.). The space was carefully chosen for its old woodwork and high ceilings to showcase our signature lighting fixtures. Today, with three showrooms within 100 meters of each other, we continue to source homogeneous accessories from around the world complementing the curated displays in our shops.

We also custom for large projects from individual homes to major hospitality businesses such as Radisson Blu in Al Qusair, Abercrombie and Kent Nile Cruiser, Forte Arabesque in Makadi Bey, Aga Khan Foundation Park in Dubai and Al Azhar Park in Cairo.
